Tanzania Climate

TANZANIA CLIMATE

The weather in Tanzania varies across its regions, offering favorable travel times throughout the year. Coastal areas experience the highest temperatures and humidity, while the North and highlands maintain cooler conditions due to altitude, with temperatures ranging between 22°C and 31°C annually. Nights bring a drop in temperature to 10°C-22°C. Zanzibar’s beaches enjoy a distinctly tropical climate, situated near the Equator.

TANZANIA CLIMATE: SEASONAL CYCLES

Tanzania witnesses two annual seasons: the wet and the dry. The wet season, encompassing the ‘short rains’ from October to December and the ‘long rains’ from late March to early June, brings tropical showers in the afternoons and throughout the night. These rains, renowned globally, create a soothing and enchanting atmosphere during a Tanzanian journey.

CAN I SAFARI DURING THE RAINY SEASON?

Tanzania’s weather remains inviting throughout the year. Although heavy rains characterize the afternoons in the rainy season, the natural environment bursts with life. Lush landscapes, vibrant flora, abundant food for animals, and cooler temperatures make it an excellent time for wildlife spotting. The rainy season also offers cost advantages, with reduced safari and accommodation expenses. However, some accommodations may be closed, and road conditions, particularly in South Tanzania’s national parks, can be challenging. Open parks during the rainy season include Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Lake Natron, and Arusha National Park. Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi & Udzungwa are better avoided. If these destinations are on your list, plan your visit during the dry season.

HOW DOES TANZANIA WEATHER AFFECT WILDLIFE?

he rain transforms the landscape into a lush haven for wildlife, with increased animal activity. The abundance of food and freshwater encourages animals to roam in large numbers. The rain also provides a reprieve from the sun’s harsh heat. Many safari enthusiasts find the rainy season offers a more intimate and vibrant safari experience. For bird enthusiasts, this time of year welcomes numerous migratory birds to Tanzania.
